Fighter Jet For Sale

Fighter Jet For Sale! 6 Fighter Jets You Can Buy Right Now

It has been a dream for every pilot or aviation enthusiast at one point in time; to one day be able to own and fly their very own fighter jet. For most people this dream is usually slashed by not only the incredibly high up-front costs, but also the extremely expensive operating costs and costs of ownership that come with these high performance aircraft. While this is true for many modern fighter aircraft, you may be surprised to find that most of the aircraft in this list don’t cost much more than a brand new Cessna 172! To many people’s surprise, there is a fighter jet for sale in about any location you can think of! Even if you aren’t seriously considering buying one of these planes, it’s still fun to dream and learn about these pieces of aviation history!

Aero L-39 Albatros

Fighter Jet For Sale

Background

Primarily designed as a jet trainer aircraft, the Albatros was developed in Czechoslovakia by Aero Vodochody during the 1960s. The main purpose of the L-39 was to ultimately replace the L-29 Delphin as a trainer. Interestingly, the Albatros entered service as a ground attack aircraft and was equipped was a multitude of ordinance. There are even some reports of several L-39s claiming air to air kills! With a top speed of 466 MPH and a range of more than 1000 NM, You’re sure to garner all the attention at the airplane meetups. All of this to say, the L-39 should not be overlooked when it comes to high performance aircraft.

Costs

In terms of turbine powered aircraft, the Albatros is actually quite cheap! They can easily be found anywhere from 200-400k USD. For a jet powered aircraft that’s dirt cheap. As far as operating costs go, the L-39 will set you back around 2000 USD per hour to operate. Of course there are other expenses such as the hangar and general maintenance/inspections but if you can afford the operating costs of this beast, the rest shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Where Can They Be Found?

Surprisingly, the L-39 Albatros can be found abundantly throughout the world. This is due in part to the fact that more than 3000 of these aircraft were produced and exported from 1969. If you’re seriously considering purchasing one of these beauties, a good place to start would either be controller.com or trade-a-plane.com. There is almost always an Albatros or two for sale on these websites.

Lockheed F-104 Starfighter

Fighter Jet For Sale

Background

If speed is what you’re craving, then the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is the plane for you. During the Cold War, the F-104 was routinely deployed as a supersonic fighter/bomber aircraft. There’s a reason this aircraft got it’s nickname “missile with a man in it”. Even though it’s a Cold War era aircraft, the performance capabilities of the Starfighter are astounding. With a top speed of more than 1600 MPH, the F-104 is sure to get you were you need to go, and get you there quickly.

Costs

The upfront cost of a Lockheed F-104 will cost you somewhere in the realm of 500,000 USD. Again like the L-39, for a jet powered aircraft (especially one of this caliber) this is a steal. The operating cost of a Starfighter is around 5,000 USD per hour. Although pricey, the F-104 makes up for itself with its performance.

Where Can They Be Found?

The Starfighter can be a bit more difficult to find as many of them are unfortunately in military boneyards. However as with the case with every aircraft on this list, a great place to start would be controller.com or  trade-a-plane.com.

A-4 Skyhawk

Fighter Jet For Sale

Background

Many of you will recognize this jet from the movie Top Gun in which they were used as opponents for F-14 Tomcats. While this is not how they were used in real life (bummer..), they were used by the United States Navy and Marine Corps as a light attack aircraft (sweet!). Although the A-4 isn’t a super fast, super sleek jet, it still boasts the ability to land on a carrier and fly at a range of 700 miles! It also just looks really cool! That being said, if you want to get your hands on one of these, you’ll have to fork over some serious bills.

Costs

The upfront cost of the Skyhawk is quite a bit more than some of the other jets on this list. Coming in at just under 1 million USD, owning an A-4 will certainly cost you a pretty penny. The operating cost of an A-4 usually sits around 4,500 USD; so it doesn’t get much cheaper. If you do however have the money for one of these jets, you will undoubtedly be owning a very significant piece of aviation history.

Where Can They Be Found?

As with the other planes in this list, the A-4 can be found at common aircraft selling sites such as controller.com or trade-a-plane.com. In fact, the A-4 pictured is currently for sale and can be found here!

Mcdonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom

Fighter Jet For Sale

Background

In my opinion, the F-4 is the coolest plane on this list. It was perhaps the most impressive fighter during the Vietnam War and even some time into the Cold War. The F-4 even broke records for its top speed of nearly 1500 MPH and range of more than 1700 miles. The F-4 is definitely a high performance aircraft, but you’ll be paying for all that power.

Costs

There is currently an F-4 Phantom for sale on controller.com for a little more than 2 million USD. Not only is the upfront cost of an F-4 extremely steep, but it will cost you around 13,000 USD per hour to operate. Obviously this is not something that the everyday person can even remotely afford, but it is still cool to have the option!

Where Can They Be Found?

The F-4 is one of the more difficult aircraft on this list to find. In fact, I could only find one that was for sale. Given that this aircraft is so incredibly expensive, this shortage shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

Mikoyan Mig-29

Background

Arguably the most capable (and expensive) aircraft on this list, the Mig-29 is the holy grail of fighter jets that civilians can own. During the 1970s, the Mikoyan Mig-29 was developed by the Soviet Union in order to counter the air superiority fighters of the United States; the F-15 and the F-16. Being that the Mig-29 is on par with these American jets (which are still in use today), this plane is a monster in the skies. Obviously you wouldn’t be flying around with missiles and a loaded canon, but you’ll sure be able to outmaneuver any other civilian plane that may cross your path!

Costs

Like I mentioned before, the Mig-29 is the most expensive jet on this list. There are currently two Mig-29s for sale on trade-a-plane, coming in at around 4.5 million USD. Surprisingly however, the operating cost of the Mig-29 is rather low for jets of its caliber, costing around 4,500 USD per hour to operate. Still, owning and operating a Mikoyan Mig-29 will certainly cost you a fair amount of money.

Where Can They Be Found?

Like I already mentioned, there are two Mig-29s for sale on trade-a-plane currently. These are the only two that I could find, but the fact that two of them are for sale in the first place is amazing.

Fouga CM-170 (Fouga Jet)

Background

Probably the cheapest jet on this list, the Fouga CM-170 is a French jet trainer developed in the 50s. The Fouga Jet was consistently used as a close air support fighter during several wars. As old as it is, the CM-170 is quite impressive with a top speed of 444 MPH and a range of 750 miles! Aside from its performance, the CM-170s peculiar design makes it a cool plane to own!

Costs

The upfront cost of a Fouga CM-170 is the cheapest on this list. Many times they can be found for under 100,000 USD! The operating cost per hour is a little more than 1,000 USD per hour, so not bad especially considering that the CM-170 is a turbine aircraft. All in all, owning a CM-170 won’t cost you much more than a regular GA aircraft!

Where Can They Be Found?

Fouga CM-170s can regularly be found on aircraft selling websites as well as individual sellers. They’re a very common warbird to find for sale!
